The University of Wisconsin - Superior women’s hockey team played to a 2-1 loss and a 2-2 tie this weekend against the Lake Forest Foresters.

In the first game Friday night, the ‘Jackets and Foresters played a high tempo scoreless first period. Both the Yellowjacket’ Melissa Kunzelman (Brandon, Manitoba) and the Foresters’ Alyssa Wintermute made many great saves to keep their teams close.

The ‘Jackets then started off the second period strong as Senior Jodi Holland (Rochester, MN) scored a short-handed marker only 5:33 into the second.

Senior Jess Tyra (Fridley, MN) picked up the helper on the goal. The lead was short lived however, as Lake Forest’s Kim Herring tipped in the tying goal at 9:12 of the second frame. Once tied, both teams played tight and kept up the pace with end-to-end action until Herring potted her second of the night with only 36 seconds left in the second frame.

Down by a goal, the ‘Jackets kept pressure on the Foresters all throughout the third period and came close to tying the game up. In the end, Wintermute made all the clutch saves she had to, propelling the Foresters to their third consecutive win of the year.

Kunzelman ended the game with 14 saves while Wintermute turned aside 15.

In game two on Saturday afternoon, both teams came out hard again and gave the 100 fans in attendance an exciting first period, even though no goals were scored. Like the night before, much of the scoring came in the second period.

Lake Forest’s Sam Herron started the scoring three minutes in with a shot that beat Kunzelman to take 1-0 lead. However, less than four minutes later, the Foresters took two penalties allowing junior forward Teagan Cassan (Medora, Manitoba) to bury a rebound off of junior Kayla Chilstrom’s (Lino Lakes, MN) point shot.

With the momentum, the ‘Jackets continued playing solid hockey and finally took the lead as Chilstrom potted her second goal of night with the assists going to junior Alyssa Breu (Faribault, MN) and Cassan.

Going into the third period, the ‘Jackets lead the game 2-1 and took the momentum from the second frame with them. The play once again went back and forth until 5:31 of the third when Kim Herring scored her third goal of the weekend on a power play knotting the game up at two’s.

The remainder of the third went scoreless and the game was then taken into overtime.

In the extra frame, the ‘Jackets outplayed the Foresters and had a five-on-three power play for 47 seconds but couldn’t find the back of the net as Wintermute shut the door on the ‘Jackets.

In the end, Kunzelman made 17 saves and Wintermute made 18, helping both teams play to a 2-2 tie.

Cassan, Breu, and Chilstrom both ended the game with 2 points.

UWS played their second game without last year’s leading scorer Jodi Holland as she had injured her shoulder Friday night.

UWS takes on the University of Concordia-Morehead in a couple games next weekend in Morehead. They return home Tuesday, November 17 at 7:00 p.m. to take on Gustavus Adolphus at Wessman Arena.
