The Health and Wellness Center on the University of Wisconsin - Superior campus is no more.

Now, it is known as the Marcovich Wellness Center in honor of Toby Marcovich, Superior attorney, longtime UWS supporter and former president of the UW - System Board of Regents.

The new name was officially given at a ceremony starting at 5:00 on April 16, at the front entrance of the building. Chancellor Julius Erlenbach and Marcovich will spoke at the dedication.

Some students think that the name change won’t be something the sticks. Brandt Devich says that even with the name change it will still be the HWC.

“Until I leave here, it will always be the HWC to me,” said Devich.

Bart Sonnenberg says that the renaming is a nice gesture, but thinks there are more people to be honored.

“Renaming it is a good way to show how grateful we are for all that has been done, but I’d like there to be some way to say ‘thanks’ to everyone that’s helped out with these projects,” said Sonnenberg.

Marcovich is from Superior and has been very involved in the community. He currently is a partner in the law firm of Marcovich, Cochrane, Milliken, Swanson and Kropid located in Superior.

In 1997, the Wisconsin Governor at the time, Tommy Thompson, appointed Marcovich to the UW System Board of Regents. During his seven years on the board he was elected twice as the regent president.

While on the board of regents, Marcovich played a key role in gaining the state approval and support for the construction of the building that now will have his name.
