The University of Wisconsin-Superior men's hockey team
played with heart and soul Wednesday evening, but were unable to pull out a win
in their NCAA playoff 3-2 overime loss against the Hamline Pipers.
Chris Bererguer (#55) would put the puck low past Freshman goaltender Drew Strandberg's left side, giving Hamline the win. A powerplay would put Hamline up 1-0 early in the second period after a scoreless first. Hamline's Jordan Van Gildar (#19) would score at 4:51 converting on a interference call against uws's Jesse Junkermeir (#22).
The 'Jackets would answer seven minutes later with Josh Kessler (#17) tipping the puck behind Hamline goaltender Beau Christian (#60). With less then a minute left, UW-Superior would take the lead with captain Talon Berlando (#25) putting an unassisted goal past Christian.
Aggressive play on both sides would keep play even until Hamline's Danny Vranek(#89) would put one low past Standberg with 8:45 left to play. Both teams created even more chances, but would end the third at a tie with Strandberg stopping 22 of 25 shots and Christian stopping 37 of 39.
Onetime play was dominated by UW-Superior at the beginning, with the 'Jackets putting up 5 shots on net. Yet, Hamline would convert on their second of five powerplays when Logan Isley was put in the box on a tripping call. Hamline moves on to play St. Norbert College in the NCAA semi-final this Saturday in De Pere, Wisconsin.
