Heartbreak was the name of the game this weekend in University of Wisconsin-Superior hockey as both the men’s and the women’s teams lost in their respective cup playoffs.

The women Yellowjackets took on Adrian College Friday in River Falls, Wisc. in a semi-final matchup in the O’Brien Cup against Adrian College.  The 'Jackets were unable to overcome a 1-0 deficit early in the first period and would go on to lose 3-0. The women’s team finished the year 13-8-7 and it is still unclear whether they will make it to the NCAA Tournament.

On Saturday, the Yellowjacket men’s team didn’t fare better.  UW-Superior lost 2-1 against St. Norbert College to lose the Peters Cup championship.  Though the game was close, UW-Superior couldn’t overcome a first period push by St. Norbert’s that ended up with an early goal followed by a power play goal.  Superior cut the lead in half only with 45 seconds left on the clock, but still failed to score another despite out-shooting St. Norberts 31-22.

The Yellowjacket men’s team however, did achieve a playoff berth for the NCAA tournament.  They take on Hamline University Wednesday, March 9 at 7 p.m. at Wessman Arena.  Tickets are $10 and are on sale now.
