Although there have been no documented cases of the H1N1 virus at UW-Superior school officials are saying it is virtually inevitable there will be in the near future.
Cases of the flu strain have popped up in the Northland where several cases have been reported at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, and area high schools. With such a close proximity to UW-Superior there is a great chance this virus will find its way on campus.
Students are strongly encouraged to pay special attention this flu season, especially with the new H1N1 virus circulating. There are many precautions and preventative measures that can be taken to help ensure your health. Everyday things such as washing hands after using the bathroom or using tissues are a great ways to help prevent the virus.
Student Health Services on campus are taking extra measures to help combat this coming flu season. Handrails, doorknobs and public telephones are being cleaned more frequently. Hand sanitizer may also be distributed in computer labs. This option is strongly encouraged by the department for health reasons.
On top of the added safety measures, the Douglas County Health Department will be offering seasonal flu vaccinations in the Rothwell Student Center on Thursday, September 17th, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to get season flu shots. Pneumonia shots will also be available during the same time. The cost is $22 for a flu shot and $48 for a pneumonia shot.
Anyone with concerns or questions is encouraged to contact the Student Health Services Office. The office is located in Hawkes Hall, 2231 Catlin Avenue, Room 216. All inquiries are confidential. Information can also be found on their website.
