Gesture proves not so harmless

A satirical piece by Tyler LaRose

As numerous as they are hard to ignore, the hundreds of yard signs bought and posted around the Superior community each fall were once viewed by most as a collective “Welcome” to the massive student body ascending onto the city.

Now, however, views on the yearly appearance of the signs have turned into ones of confusion and frustration.

The Superior Chamber of Commerce has been purchasing these signs for years, solely under the notion that the signs affect all aspects of city life in a positive way.

Sadly, many members of the community have grown tired of seeing their lawns and walkways dotted with these yard signs, and have started to question why the signs exist in the first place.

One long-time Superior native complained, “How am I supposed to mow that grass median between the sidewalk and street, if all these damn signs are here?” He added, “Sure, I could take them out when I mow, but I don’t want my neighbors thinking I don’t support the university.”

Other residents view the annual arrival of the yard signs as an omen of what is to come.

“I live in an apartment building that is shared by many UWS students,” commented one woman who lives with her husband and young child.

“To me, [the signs] are just a constant reminder of all the college parties that will be going on all around us very shortly. I’d better get used to not sleeping at night,” she lamented.

Being an election year, many citizens feel that yard signs are already in overabundance. “My neighbors already have dozens of political yard signs displayed in their yards, why does the Chamber of Commerce feel the need to add the ‘welcome students’ signs? I’m already getting dizzy when I drive, trying to read all the signs. This is just too much” stated one frustrated Superior resident.

“Can we please change it up a little?” commented another man. “Every year I see these signs, and it’s getting old. I mean, I know we want to welcome the students into our community, but don’t you think we’ve over-welcomed them? They get the point by now. It’s like that one creepy neighbor who tries to invite you over for dinner every night; it just gets annoying eventually.”

It is unclear how much money the Chamber spends every year on the welcoming yard signs, but nevertheless local frustration has reached its peak.

When interviewed, one University of Wisconsin-Superior asked, “What signs?”.
