The 1st annual Food Wars by A’viands turned unexpectedly dramatic, but was well received by all.

About 40 people showed up to the event Tuesday evening on the Yellowjacket Union Plaza, which pitted the A’viands catering crew against the University of Wisconsin - Superior Barbeque Club. The purpose of the event was to decide who could make the better beef brisket slider. A panel of some six students and faculty judged for the event, while others paid to get heaps of yummy food.

When asked how this event came about, Ryan Flaherty of the UWS BBQ Club said, “Emily Mitchell [of A’viands] contacted us about doing something, and we came up with the idea together.”

When the judges had made their final decision it was called in A’viands favor, much to the BBQ Club’s confusion.

Ryan Flaherty was quoted as saying, “The judges preferred A’viands’, but the general crowd liked ours better.”

That call was later rescinded, as the judge’s votes had found to have been miscounted. The BBQ Club had actually won by twelve points. The team was elated by the news, and received an honorable bow from A’viands’ chef in turn.

Former UWS student and spectator Jenna Halverson said, “It should have been a blind test to make sure no one was biased.”

Overall, everyone enjoyed the event, mentioning especially how much good food they got for the price. When asked if this event would ever happen again, event goers and participants alike responded positively.
