Melted power cords are an extreme fire hazard.
Today Environmental Health and Safety Director Carol Lindberg informed students of fire safety tips in the Rothwell Student Center as a part of the ongoing UW-Superior Ready Week.

Lindberg focused mostly on dorm fire safety, stating that often times dorm residents are the least aware of fire hazards and what to do in the event of an emergency. Her most valuable tip- treat all fire alarms like there was an actual fire.

“If it’s a false alarm, we’ve lost a little time but we’ve lost no lives,” said Lindberg.

Dorm residents are required to evacuate the residence halls in the event of a fire alarm unless otherwise instructed. Failure to do so can result in a fine.

Lindberg said most false alarms can be easily prevented. Burning food and overloaded outlets are amongst the top reasons for a fire or false alarm.

A melted power cord found in a dorm room was on display to show students that the threat of fire is real. Lindberg says that the use of power strips and outlet converters should always be used with caution and grounded whenever possible.

“It’s always best to err on the side of safety. No matter what,” said Lindberg.

Lindberg says that a little common sense can go a long way towards preventing a fire. Always keeping fresh batteries in a smoke alarm and having a route of escape are some of the most valuable tips Lindberg has to offer.
