The fall semester of 2010 may be over five months away, but now is the time to get your Free Application for Federal Student Aid turned in.

Financial aid is important to students and can give them different options to pay for education. The University of Wisconsin-Superior’s financial aid office has some tips to share with students regarding FAFSA, financial aid, and taxes. Over 89 percent of students at UWS receive some sort of financial aid.

The best time to file the FAFSA is no later than March 1. That way, the application will meet the priority deadline of April 1. Students can still file all the way up until the semester starts, but the earlier they file, the better loans, scholarships, grants, and work study will be available.

Many of the funds are on a first come first serve basis. It is important for students to know that there are websites out there that will try to take your money to file your FAFSA form for them, when in reality, the application process is free. The correct website to file your FAFSA on is: FAFSA.gov. This is the official website and students will not be charged any service fees.

Donna Dahlvang, a Student Services Specialist from the UWS financial aid office, wants to remind students it is important to file early, and now is the time when students should file and apply for scholarships.

Scholarships are free money, so remember to take advantage of them. Dahlvang also wants to remind students to check their “Student Center” online to view their bill and any outstanding charges they owe.

“We are here to help...call, email, or stop in, and file FAFSA early and follow up with the office; if you don’t receive an award letter and nothing is dispersed to your account, stop in and find out why,” Dahlvang said.

If students need help with filing their FAFSA application, the financial aid office is more than willing to help. They are located in Old Main, office 110. Students can stop in to ask questions, call, check out their website at
www.uwsuper.edu/finaid/ or visit their new “fan” page on Facebook.
