Don't forget to remember

It’s ironic that a holiday that is supposed to be about remembering is so easily forgotten.

Veterans Day is one of only ten Federal holidays. Yet, it is often overlooked and people may only notice that the mail is not delivered that day.

Most people do not even know the exact reason behind Veterans Day.

“Isn’t it honoring the veterans of Vietnam?” said Alex Arnold.

Savannah Smith, although she was unsure of her answer, knew the meaning behind Veterans Day.

“My understanding is that we honor those who have served in war – the veterans both dead and alive,” she said.

Veterans Day is observed in remembrance of war veterans. The difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day is that Memorial Day honors those who have died in service or as a result of injuries incurred during service, whereas Veterans Day celebrates all veterans – living or dead.

Smith also knew the exact date of Veterans Day – November 11. She credits this to having a father who is a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

“I think [Veteran’s Day] is important because my dad’s a veteran, and I think it’s important to show our appreciation to those who serve,” said Smith.

Veterans Day is celebrated on November 11, or the closest weekday to this date, because it is the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice Treaty that ended World War I at 11:00 on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.

Veterans Day was first held in 1919 with the name Armistice Day in honor of that Treaty. Then, in 1954 the named was changed to Veterans Day to honor the veterans of all wars, not just WWI.

Every year on Veterans Day, there is a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns. There are also parades and celebrations across the country.

Other countries also celebrate what they still refer to as Armistice Day on or around November 11.
