The “Boxes and Walls” program is a tour designed to help people understand what discrimination is, and how it affects lives. The tour leads students through four rooms where scenarios of discrimination and oppression are acted out. These scenarios are drawn from the experiences of people with varying disabilities, First Nations peoples, the LGBTQ community, and people struggling with language barriers.
“We are hoping to target everyone throughout the community, but mostly students. Not just college students, but students in high school and middle school as well where discrimination and oppression are most often introduced and experienced,” Rachel Zubiate of the Multicultural Affairs Office said.
The program is a collaboration between students, faculty and staff of University of Wisconsin–Superior. The rooms will also have information including statistics and definitions of offensive words, and about discrimination and oppression.
The tours will be available Mon., April 25 from 6 to 8 p.m., Tues., April 26 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m., and Wed., April 27 6 to 8 p.m. In the Great Room of the Yellowjacket Union.
