Differential tuition was the big topic at the Student Government Association meeting on Mon., Oct. 25, with senators reporting back on their conversations with students and faculty on the existing program and on the possibility of expansion.

Senator Dean was the first to comment, saying that he heard reactions of “Didn't we take care of this last year?” and “Not again!”

Most senators reported confusion regarding what was voted on last year, and that they frequently heard that low cost is a factor in why students choose to come to University of Wisconsin – Superior. Senator Garfield mentioned some acceptance of moderate differentials for technology.

The point was brought up that it should be kept in mind that the differential tuition will be in effect over a period of years, that small amounts will add up and that a smaller increase would be more likely to pass. There was a good deal of confusion on different funding sources for the University, and that senators should be clear on what the funds raised by the differential tuition would be used for.

President Duffy commented that some students might not be interested in computers or career services, and that any proposal should take in to account what the students say they need. She also emphasized that this is an opportunity to build the program from the ground up.

An ad-hoc committee is being formed to gather information from the student body on what they are interested in funding with the differential, and how much they are willing to increase their tuition. The committee will have no function other than gathering information, and will be comprised of ten to fifteen people. There will be a sign-up sheet posted in the SGA office in the Yellowjacket Union, and senators and students both are encouraged to sign up. Senators are again asked to talk to classes, to raise awareness and to seek input.

“I really want to have a ground-up proposal with students active in creating the new program,” said Interim Chancellor Christopher Markwood.
