The lights were dim, the pretzels and snacks were on the tables, the bar set up, and the decorated pianos were ready on stage.
No, this is not a piano bar we are talking about. It was what the Great Room in the Yellowjacket Union looked like on Saturday night, where nearly 60 people gathered for the Deuces Wild! Dueling Pianos show. The show was a part of UW-Superior Weekend.
David Eichholz and Ted Manderfeld have been performing their Dueling Pianos show for nine years. Eichholz says he has been doing it for 14 years, and has played the piano since he was four years old.
"I grew up in the woods. We didn't have a TV, so I played the piano," Eichholz said. The guitar and saxophone are also on the list of instruments Eichholz can play.
Ted Manderfeld, whose drink of choice is Diet Coke, and proudly displays it on his piano while playing, has been playing piano for 21 years. He also showed off his harmonica and ukulele skills to the audience on Saturday night.
Over the past nine years, Deuces Wild! has performed over 1,200 shows. The largest audience they have had was 8,000, while the smallest was 14. "I like to call our show musical stupidity," said Eichholz. "We just like to have fun on the stage. We take requests from the audience, interact with them throughout the show, and we even have the guests come up on stage".
Deuces Wild! plays a variety of songs from a variety of different genres. From "Folsom Prison Blues" to "Piano Man" to the theme song from Cheers!, Deuces Wild! can play it all. Manderfeld even dresses up as Elton John and plays a few of John's tunes for the audience members. Deuces Wild! enjoys interacting with audience members throughout the show, bringing them on stage to dance and wing with them. They even had a member of the audience that is a Coast Guardsman come up on stage to thank him for everything he has done.
Deuces Wild! will be performing on Halloween night at the Grey Solon Ballroom in Duluth.
