The University of Wisconsin-Superior will see many changes to the face of campus this year, starting first and foremost with the demolition of Sundquist Hall.
According to a campus project update from the university, Sundquist is currently being taken apart, "with the goal of recycling at least 50 percent of its materials." Demolition of the former residence hall and faculty office building is expected to begin January 30. Once the building is gone the space will remain green and open for future development.
McCaskill Hall, which offered so many students a barrier from winter winds while walking between classes, will also be demolished this semester. Hazardous materials are currently being removed from the building, and dismantling will begin soon; the goal for recycling materials is also set at fifty percent. Demolition is expected to be completed by the middle of March.
A new greenhouse is coming to campus following the demolition of McCaskill Hall in May of this year. The current Stanley Oexemann Greenhouse will serve as a standalone building until the new greenhouse is completed, and will then be razed. The new greenhouse will retain the name of Stanley Oexemann.
Lastly, but certainly not least, is the planned renovations of Ross and Hawkes Halls, slated to begin in July of 2012 and go until August of 2013. This gargantuan project will include the connection of the two halls with a common lobby, as well as renovation Hawkes Hall from being office space back into its intended residence hall form. The lobby and renovations of Hawkes Hall are expected to be complete in December 2012. Work crews will then turn their attention to Ross Hall from January until August 2013. Once all of the work is done, there will be room for 440 students - 200 more than Ross Hall is currently able to house.
With these demolitions and renovations comes an air of change; hopefully, the changes will be positive.
