The UW-Superior men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in the Univeristy of Minnesota-Duluth Campus Quest meet on the 12th of September.

The men’s team placed third at UMD and were led by Scott Behling. The freshman from Duluth completed the 8,000 meter course in a time of 27:55 which landed him fifth overall and third in team scoring.

Junior Jason Lindelof from Woodbury, MN finished 35 seconds behind Behling in ninth place, seventh in team scoring. Jordan Peterson (So. Duluth) placed 9th, Seth Neumann (Jr. Eagle River, MN) finished 17th, and Taylor Gombos (Jr. St. Cloud, MN) finished 21st to round out the Yellowjackets scoring.

“The guys ran a good race up at UMD.  They finished a good third.  UMD is a Division II school and Lakehead from Thunder Bay has a lot of fifth year seniors.  I’m happy with how they competed,” said men’s and women’s head coach Paul Nisius.

The Yellowjacket women were paced by Jenna Halverson, a senior from Barnum, MN, who finished 22nd overall and completed the 5,000 meter course with a time of 20:54.  Following Halverson were Natasha Hinzmann (Jr. Duluth) in 50th, Casey Hoffman (Jr. Waukesha, WI)  in 59th, and Anastasia Kirchoff (Fr. Superior, WI) in 73rd. Because the women had only four runners compete, they did not qualify for team scoring.

“The first few meets of the season are meant for experience.  The meets that matter are the conference and regional meets at the end of the year.  Hopefully we can gain some experience and confidence as we progress through the season,” said Nisius.

The UW-Superior women will rely on Jenna Halverson to pace them throughout the season while the men have a solid top five runners.

Both the men and women competed at the Northland Invite on September 1st , both teams placing third.

The men and women will compete on Saturday, September 26th at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, MN.  The Roy Griak draws teams from across the nation and is hosted by the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers.
