The mumbling of an increasingly excited crowd was growing louder just five minutes before Tuesday's performance of "The Music of Latin America and Beyond," but one couple came for more than just the music.
“My daughter has been playing clarinet since sixth grade," Ken Broshofske said proudly during the intermission. "My wife and I have been to every concert she has ever been in.”
Although Sara Broshofske was not among the spotlight instrumentalists in the performance - those positions were filled by UWS music instructors Pamela Bowen Bustos, Nixon Bustos and Matthew Faerber - her parents sat and watched the show intently, their eyes locked with the focus of a pair of lions watching over their cub.
“We are excited every time we get to come to one of these shows,” Ken Broshofske said. “She’s been in a lot of other concerts where she has had solos, but this one is still just as fun to watch.”
The recital included music from Latin America, Italy and the Czech Republic.
Sara is a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. She also plays many other instruments; she played trumpet in high school and more recently picked up the saxophone. "I sort of play the piano but it is required for my major,” she added.
As Sara’s parents sat listening to their daughter play and tapping their toes to the tunes along with the other 50 audience members, Webb Recital Hall not only filled with the sound of music, but the warmth of parents' love.
The University Recital Series continues October 18 with percussion music - drums, marimbas, cymbals - played by instructors from Twin Ports' universities.
