Savin' a Buck or Two

Student discounts can be found at many of the local businesses in Superior

When the economy isn’t doing so well, look no further than your student identification card to help alleviate the stress on your wallet.

A variety of businesses in the Twin Ports offer student discounts.

Julie’s Restaurant offers a free beverage with the purchase of any platter supreme and is conveniently located only a short walk away from campus on Belknap St.

Pizza is a college student favorite and can be purchased rather inexpensively with a student discount. Papa Murphy’s offers a one-topping pizza for only $5.99. When dining with friends, Domino’s Pizza serves up 3 medium one-topping pizzas for $15. For the pizza connoisseur, Pizza Luce in Duluth will take $4 off of any bill over $20.

Perhaps one of the best deals on food is offered by Culver’s Frozen Custard and Butter Burgers. They have a buy one get one free deal on their value baskets. If dining alone, a single scoop cake cone or dish is free with the purchase of a value basket.

“We would love to see more businesses have discounts for students,” said Dane Rasmussen. He and Terra Rasmussen, juniors at UWS, frequent Culver’s almost weekly to utilize the offered discount.

Deals on food aren’t the only discounts that businesses offer. The student I.D. card can be used on everything from oil changes to bowling.

Village Lanes in South Superior is a hot spot for students on Wednesday nights. After 9 P.M., students can bowl for $2 a game, including shoes.

“We’ve had the student discount for years now,” explained manager T.J. Bergren. “Hopefully the discount brings the students in and gets them interested in bowling. If enough students were interested, we could maybe add Thursday nights.”

Although the economy has affected the number of students that bowl every Wednesday night, Village Lanes wouldn’t pursue getting rid of the discount.

“We want to keep our relationship with the students,” added Bergren.
