Money raised for Haiti from the silent auction held by the University of Wisconsin-Superior’s World Student Association and money raised from freewill donations collected by UWS’s Black Student Union was presented to the Red Cross in a ceremony in the Yellowjacket Union atrium on March 9. About 15 people were in attendance as the check for the $1520.55 raised was presented.

WSA President Saroj Dhital, hosted the ceremony, and thanked all those who contributed. He said that this donation would not have been possible without the help of others.

“Hopefully this will also inspire others to help donate relief to Haiti,” he said.

Of the money raised, the largest single contribution was a $145 donation given by Ivy Vainio’s 11-year old son Jacob. Jacob stated that all the money that he donated was from his allowance.

“I just thought that someone else needed my allowance more than I did,” Jacob said.

The Red Cross representative who attended to receive the check said that the check will come just in time to help pay for shelters for Haitian residents before the rainy season officially begins there on April 1.
