Despite the soggy and chilly weather, over 180 people gathered at Barker’s Island Saturday morning to be a part of the 8th annual 5K Run/Walk put on by Superior’s Center Against Sexual and Domestic Abuse on October 3.
“October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. This is a great way to gather our community allies and raise awareness and funds for CASDA,” said Assistant Director of CASDA and event coordinator Erika Leif.
Over 40 runners and 120 walkers participated and raised funds for the event. Several volunteers were also on hand to help with registration and other details.
UW-Superior student Jared Pehler was a first time 5K walk participant. He felt it was an important event because it raises money to help people.
“I’ve met several ladies that have used the services and they’re wonderful people,” said Pehler, who used to live in Ross Hall which is next to Hawkes Hall where CASDA is located.
As of October 5, CASDA had raised around $12,600 from the event, most of which came from pledges and personal donations. Leif said she expects and hopes that a few more pledges will trickle in over the next few days.
