As a follow-up to the Caps for Cancer soccer games held last Wednesday, the men's and women's soccer teams gathered in the Yellowjacket Union at noon on Thursday to get their hair cut.
Caps for Cancer was an event held to collect winter caps, which will be donated to the Caring Ways Cancer Research Center. The caps will be given to cancer patients throughout the Twin Ports and Ashland area who have lost their hair to cancer treatments.
Men's Head Coach Joe Mooney said that Athletic Marketing Director Jon Garver came up with the head shaving. Garver's idea was that if 100 caps were collected, the team would shave their heads, and at 150 caps Mooney would shave his head as well. The number of collected caps surpassed 300, so that meant everyone got to participate in getting their ears lowered.
Some of the team members were not excited to be losing their locks of hair, but they went through with it, and in the end Coach Mooney walked away with a mohawk, which he intends to keep until Saturday.
Members of the women's soccer team as well as both coaches also cut their hair to be donated to Locks of Love. Their hair will go toward making wigs for those who have lost their hair due to treatment.
