On Feb. 11, the University of Wisconsin-Superior’s Campus Safety finally moved from Rothwell Student Center’s basement into its new home: an old, converted convenience store (known colloquially to UWS students and staff as “the Pentagon”) on the corner of Belknap Street and Catlin Avenue.
They were joined in the new facility by UWS parking services on February 16. Although both services have moved in, there is still much organizing and modeling to be done inside the building, but all involved believe the new building will do a much better job of serving the UWS campus.
Campus Safety Officer Mike Bodin talked about how the new building would better serve campus.
“All the parking, safety, after-hours passes and all that will be taken care of here. It’s a one-stop-shop,” he said. He also added that because all the services will be in one place, it will be much easier to communicate with one another than when all the services were spread out. “It’ll help us to better do our jobs,” Bodin said, then added with a laugh, “We’ll see.”
Bodin believes that with all the services in one place, it will first and foremost enhance customer service. He also said that part of the design of the building was to accommodate those with disabilities; there is a low counter next to the main counter for those who use wheelchairs, and Bodin said that automatic openers will be installed on the entrance and exit doors soon.
As for the size of the building, Bodin stated that some parts of the building were bigger than the old Campus Safety office located in Rothwell Student Center, but also noted that as of right now, there is less office space to use in the new facility.
Above all, though, Bodin again stressed the better customer service.
“The main thing is that the customer service is going to be greatly enhanced,” he said.
