The Superior Outdoor Adventure Program, more commonly called by its acronym SOAP, is an organization on the University of Wisconsin-Superior campus seeking to provide recreational opportunities for students.
“We do trips, challenge courses, and rock walls, as well as providing rental equipment,” says Krystal Carlson, one of SOAP’s student leaders.
“We try and keep [the trips] fairly local to places like Ely’s Peak, the Cornucopia Sea Caves, and the Superior Hiking Trail,” she said, but added in that spring break trips can travel to much farther away destinations.
Last year SOAP’s spring break trip took students to Kentucky, and the previous year the spring break trip was to the vast expanses of the Grand Canyon in northern Arizona.
A SOAP membership costs only $30 and provides many rewards for those who purchase a membership.
Members receive discounts on SOAP trips along with access and rentals to the group’s equipment such as climbing gear, camping gear and even canoes and kayaks to certified members. And even more, SOAP members can get discounts at local businesses such as Duluth Pack in Canal Park.
Above all though, Carlson likes the opportunities that SOAP can provide students.
“There are so many outdoor opportunities in this area. SOAP gets students out of the dorms and off campus,” she said.
