With the Fall Resume Drive-Thru fast approaching students are striving to sell themselves to potential employers. But some need more help than others.  Resumes are a key selling point to show off your talents and your experience that makes you right for the job.

There are many reasons to have a good quality resume.  Career Services Coordinator Kathy Pykkonen explains that selling yourself and getting your foot in the door is a major part of the process.

“Making yourself attractive to employers and standing out from others can be a good way to get recognized.  By having a well-organized, job appropriate resume you can present yourself in a more attractive light,” said Pykkonen.

The Career Services Department at the University of Wisconsin - Superior offers up some tips to students and potential job seekers as to what can make their resume stand out.

Number one, use designs that stand out and in necessary cases, headers that match the job you are applying for.  Try to grab their attention because some employers are looking at hundreds of these every week.

Second, prioritize your resume in a way that puts most important things first and your most valuable experience ahead of lesser ones in chronological order.  You never know, they might not even read your whole resume.

Third: proofread.  You would be surprised at the amount of resumes that are thrown aside because of the use of improper grammar or spelling.

Fourth, lying is absolutely unacceptable but in some cases it make be necessary to omit certain work history that has no relation to the position you are applying for.  For example, if you worked at Wendy’s when you were 16 it may not be necessary to mention for an executive position at Apple.

The list goes on and on, but it is true that if you ever want to land that dream job of yours, it may just be your resume that gets read over someone else’s because of a typo on the second line.  We all have talents and experiences that make us good at something, so make that apparent and don’t portray yourself as boring but as friendly and excited about starting a new career.
