Students may have noticed in your student digest and
around campus advertisements for an event called Boxes and Walls. This student
led event is an opportunity for participants to experience oppression through
an interactive series of vignettes, explained Assistant Dean of Students Tammy
Fanning.
There will be four themes to learn more about on the tours and including abilities; Native American culture; Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered; and language barriers. All faculty, staff, students and community members are welcome to these 30-45 minute tours.
“We want them to experience what it is like to not be included,” said Fanning.
Each area will have small groups of people walk through and participants will see, hear, and possibly interact with the individuals. The tour facilitators will explain the process and prepare participants for each theme. There will also be people debriefing participants at the end.
There will be four different opportunities to attend the Boxes and Walls event.
For more information or to volunteer at the event, contact Rachel Zubiate at: Rzubiate@uwsuper.edu or check out future tables with volunteers in the YU.
“We hope to inspire inclusively,” said Fanning.
