Women’s Basketball

The University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjacket women’s basketball team is currently dealing with a four game losing skid after beginning the season 3-0.

The ‘Jackets fell to conference foe UW-Platteville on December 4 by a final score of 82 to 74. Hailey Hart led all scorers with 24 points and added 7 rebounds and freshmen star Connie Urmanski added 19 points and 8 rebounds in a losing effort.

On Dec. 8 the’ Jackets traveled to St. Paul, Minn. to face Northwestern College but came up short in a heartbreaking 81 to 80 overtime defeat. Connie Urmanski posted a career high 26 points and had 6 rebounds for the Yellow Jackets who are now 3-4, 0-2 on the season.

Next up for UW-Superior are a pair of home games, the first is on Sat., Dec. 11 at 3:00 p.m. against the UW-Whitewater Warhawks (5-2, 2-1). The other is on Mon., Dec. 13 at 5:00 p.m. against the Northland College Lumber Jills (3-2).

 

Men’s Basketball

The University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjacket men’s basketball team is riding a two game winning streak, including their first conference win of the season.

The ‘Jackets squeaked out an 80 to 79 victory over conference opponent UW-Platteville on Dec.  4. Jake Smith played the entire 40 minutes for the Jackets and yet again led the scoring charge with 29 points and 11 rebounds. This was Smith’s first double-double of the season.

UW-Superior then traveled to St. Paul, Minn. on Dec. 8 to take on and easily defeat the Northwestern College Eagles 81 to 65. Marcus Helland had 25 points, Jake Smith had 18 and Dan Culy added 15 for the Yellowjackets as they are now 6-2, 1-1 on the season.

The team’s next challenge is on Sat., Dec. 11 at 1:00 p.m. when they host conference rival UW-Whitewater Warhawks (3-3, 1-2). They then host Northland College Lumber Jacks (2-4) on Mon., Dec. 13 at 7:00 p.m.

Following their two game home stand, they then cross the bridge on Wed., Dec. 15 to face-off with their “border-rival” St. Scholastica Saints (1-5) at 7:30 p.m.

Men's Basketball
The University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellow Jacket men’s basketball team has continued the strong start to their season.

They hosted Macalester College on November 19. The Yellow Jackets were in control throughout and cruised to a 77 to 58 victory. Marcus Helland led all scorers with 17 points, while Jake Smith added 14 points and 11 rebounds and Dan Culy also had 12 points for UWS.

Following the win, the Jackets hosted Gustavus Adolphus College. The Jackets were able to pull of a71 t0 68 “W” in this hard fought contest. Jake Smith led the Yellow Jacket charge with 19 points and 7 rebounds. Marcus Helland also had 7 rebounds and added 17 points as well.

The University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs handed the Jackets there first loss on November 23 with a final score of 78 to 74. Dustin Ritchie led UWS with 21 points and tied for the team lead in rebounds with 6.

UW-Superior is currently 3-1.

Next up for the Yellow Jackets is the College of St. Scholastica Saints (1-2) at 3:00 PM on Saturday, November 27. They then host UW-River Falls Falcons (4-1) in their first conference matchup of the season in December 1 at7:00PM.

Women's Basketball
The University of Wisconsin-Superior women’s basketball team has had a strong start to their season.

The Jackets won both of their games at the “Crown College Tip-off Classic”. The first game was on November 19 against Crown College. The Jackets cruised to victory in this game with a final tally of 88 to 51. Hailey Hart led all scorers with 21 points and added 8 rebounds and Paige Mikkelson had game high 12 rebounds for UWS.

The second game was on November 20 and had a similar result as the Jackets dominated Waldorf College 82 to 53. The Jackets leading scorer was Bri Davis who had 25 points and 10 rebounds.

On November 23, the Jackets suffered the first loss in a 95 to 56 routing by the UM-Duluth Bulldogs. Connie Urmanski had 14 points and Kelsey Thingvold had 11 points while Bri Davis added 10 rebounds for UW-Superior.

The Jackets are currently 3-1 on the season.

They next travel to UW-River Falls Falcons (3-1) on Wednesday, December 1 at 7:00 PM.

Men’s

The University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s basketball team has high hopes for this upcoming season. They are coming off a good 2009-10 season in which they reached the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play-offs. The Yellowjackets were picked as the fourth-best team in the WIAC during a preseason poll and return two of their top three scorers from last season, Jake Smith and Dan Culy. will have the chance this season to break Jim Sevals’ school scoring record.

The ‘Jackets first game was on Tuesday night at the University of Dubuque. UW-Superior was able to hold off the Spartans in a well-fought 75 to 73 victory. Smith led the way with 27 points and 9 rebounds, Dustin Ritchie added 13 points and Greg Roeder had 10 to his credit.

Next up for the ‘Jackets are a pair of home games, the first is on Fri., Nov. 19th at 7:00 p.m. against the Macalester College Scots (0-1) and the second will be on Sat., Nov. 20th at 7:00 p.m. against the Gustavus Adolphus College Lions (1-0). After the short home stand, UW-Superior will head across the bridge on Tuesday, November 23 to take on the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs (1-0) at 8:00 p.m.

Women’s

The University of Wisconsin-Superior women’s basketball team is hoping to have a much-improved season this year.

The ‘Jackets got a good jump in the right direction on Monday night as they handily disposed of the College of St. Scholastica Saints 86 to 62. Bri Davis was the leading scorer for the UW-Superior as she had 16 points and 5 rebounds and Kelsey Thingvold added 15 points and 8 rebounds. Three other Yellowjackets also scored in double digits.

Upcoming for the ‘Jackets is a spot in the Crown-College “Tip-off” Classic Tournament, which will be held this weekend on Fri., Nov. 19 and Sat., Nov. 20. The ‘Jackets will play the tournament hosts Crown College Storm at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and will face Waldorf College (0-5) at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.

After this weekend, UW-Superior will take a trip across the border to face the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs (1-0) on Tues., Nov. 23 at 6:00 p.m.
