University of Wisconsin - Superior’s Campus Security and the Duluth Police Department are warning students and the public of a scam involving debit and ATM cards.
Debit and ATM card holders have reported that they have received a computer activated phone call claiming they are a financial institution and they have information that their account will be deactivated if they do not provided them their card number, expatriation date, personal identification pin number and three-digit card security code.
Another form of this scam is card holders are instructed to call a toll-free number which is also a recording that asks them to provide the same information.
Gary Gulbrandson, the director of Campus Safety, has not received any reports from students or staff concerning the scam.
Gulbrandson wants to remind students and staff to never provide personal information of any sort to someone who calls you. Gulbrandson would like students and staff to report such calls to the Campus Security.
“We would share that information with the Superior Police Department. This type of scammer often blankets an area using automated calling equipment,” said Gulbrandson.
Students and staff can contact Campus Safety Department by calling 715-394-8114.
