The Daily Buzz 11/02/2011
Lucy Roberts Editor in Chief Hello there! I hope the week has been treating you all well. Let's get right down to it and see what's going on today at UWS. Love winter, Christmas, and volunteering? (Or even just Christmas and volunteering...) If so, consider joining the Winterfest Committee. Winterfest is a huge event that is open to the public and allows UWS to give back to the community. If being on the committee doesn't suit you, there are plenty of other volunteer opportunities. Keep an eye out here or on the school website. We all know that healthy eating habits are important, but it can be really hard to keep up with when you're in college. That's why Campus Rec is here to keep us all on top of it. They'll be holding a seminar in MWC room 2420 from 12 to 1 p.m. today to discuss healthy eating habits and how you can make them work for you. Free health advice? Can't beat that. The Business and Economics Department is having a Chili and Soup Cook Off today. I don't know where, or when. I just know it's happening because it says so on the homepage. That's all for today's Buzz! Remember to sign up for Spring Registration - it's quickly approaching! Add Comment The Daily Buzz 11/01/2011
Kirsten Scheid Managing Editor I don't know. Not much going on around campus. It's like they want us to study or something. This is what I've got. The Chancellor's Inclusive Excellence Task Force will be having a Brown Bag meeting at noon in YU 203 to talk about the results of the Campus Climate Survey and what steps should be taken next. The women's hockey team is playing against the University of St. Thomas at 7 p.m. tonight at Wessman Arena. The women's team is 1-1, so it should be a good game. Remember, you get free admission as a UW-Superior student. Take advantage of it! So. Work hard, remember there's something outside that textbook, and do something good. The Daily Buzz 10/28/2011
Lucy Roberts Editor in Chief Like I said, there is more going on this weekend than there was this week. Take a look for yourself. First off, it's a huge weekend for sports. There's actually too much for me to post here, so check out this link for more info: http://www.uwsuper.edu/news/jacket-action---huge-sports-weekend_article1346040 Good luck to our teams! Next order of business: The Monster Ball! The Yellowjacket Activities Crew Annual Dance is tonight (Friday) from 8 until 11 p.m. in the YU Great Room. There will be games, contests, refreshments, and of course dancing. It's a fun alternative to sitting in a crowded, smelly basement with people you don't know, and not nearly as scary (if you discount the vampires, ghosts and what-have-you). If you're still in the Halloween spirit on Sunday, there is Spooky Skate at Wessman Arena, just off of campus, from 1 to 3 p.m. The cost to get in is $4 with a costume, $5 without, and you can rent skates for $2 a pair. Remember, this is ice skating we're talking about. Well...maybe I'm thinking there's a lot going on because of my own packed schedule. If your own planner is filled with numerous Halloween parties, please remember to be safe and responsible. Overall, though, have a fun and memorable Halloween weekend! The Daily Buzz 10/27/2011
Kirsten Scheid Managing Editor The reception for William P. Morgan's show in the Kruk Gallery is today in the Holden Fine and Applied Arts Building from 6 to 8 p.m. Aside from that, it's 57 days till winter break. Better get cracking. Have a nice day! And do your part to make the world better. The Daily Buzz 10/26/2011
Lucy Roberts Editor in Chief Alright; a pretty slow day again. I think this whole week is going to be pretty quiet, but all of the Halloween activities this weekend should make up for it. This week is Domestic Violence Awareness Week; just bringing it up now, since I missed it on Monday. Domestic violence is a very serious issue which I personally feel strongly about, so if you don't know much about it or would like to learn more, stop by the information table in the Yellowjacket Union all this week. Also check out the related Clothesline Project. There will be an International Poetry Reading today at the Erlenbach Gathering Area on the first floor of Swenson Hall from noon to 1 p.m. Students, staff and faculty will be reading poetry from different parts of the world in different languages. It seems like a pretty great cultural experience! Career Services will be in the Marcovich Wellness Center all day today. You can stop by for assistance with all sorts of stuff, like choosing a major, resume reviews, and interviewing skills. If you need help with any of these, go see Career Services! Aaaaand that's it for the day. Keep up the hard work! The Daily Buzz 10/25/2011
Kirsten Scheid Managing Editor Wow. It's a quiet day on campus. They must want us to study or something. Heathens. Oh, well. It's just one day. We can humor them. There's always stuff going on in the YU Atrium, and I know there will be more than this, but this one is important. Stop by the Clothesline Project, a joint effort of the Center Against Sexual and Domectic Abuse (CASDA) and the Gender Equity Center, talking about the effects of domestic violence. Keep your outdoor mojo going! The UW-Superior Outdoor Adventure Program, or SOAP, will be demonstrating how to make your own firestarters out of recycled materials. Quick, fun and effective. This is at the SOAP office, Markovich Wellness Center 1438, starting promptly at 7 p.m. Last but not least, the UW-Superior Orchestra will be performing spooky music to keep you in the holiday mood. Tickets to listen to Meyer, Mendelssohn and Schubert's “Death of a Maiden” performed by the UW-Superior Camerata are $5 for adults and $3 for students and seniors. Like one of my teachers told me, WE'RE HALF-WAY THROUGH THE TERM!!!!! I want it to be over, but I'VE GOT TOO MUCH TO DO!!! In the meantime, take a deep breath and let's go make the world a better place. The Daily Buzz 10/21/2011
Lucy Roberts Editor in Chief Alright, another week down, and another weekend full of things to check out! Keep an eye on your e-mail on Friday, students. Midterm grade notices are going out that day. The second Open Mic night of the semester is on Friday night in the YU Shippar Atrium. If you've been planning on performing a song, reading some poetry, or have some stand-up to try out, now's your chance! Sign up begins at 7 p.m., with performances starting at 8. There is a futsal (soccer) tournament on Saturday starting at 3 p.m. in the Marcovich Wellness Center. Futsal is a variation of soccer that is played mainly indoors in a smaller area and with a smaller, less bouncy ball than is used in regular soccer. So if you're just sitting around in Ostrander bored out of your skull, it may be something worth checking out. If you're more into regular soccer, there is a women's game against UW-Platteville on Saturday beginning at 11:30 a.m. It's at the usual spot, down Catlin Avenue and across 28th Street behind some bushes. There is also a men's soccer game at 2 p.m. against UW-Platteville. This game is a little harder to get to, seeing as it's in Duluth at the Public Schools Stadium, so you may want to settle with watching futsal instead. Last but certainly not least is the Border Battle on Sunday from 2:30 until 6:30 p.m. Packer and Viking fans alike are invited to the YU Shippar Atrium to watch the football game and get some free food, as well as take part in some face painting and a finger football tournament. Have a great weekend! The Daily Buzz 10/20/2011
KIrsten Scheid Managing Editor Good morning, sunshine! It's supposed to be a (not totally) sunny day! I'm going to ride my bike. A little cold for it, but there are only so many chances left for the year. Now, what else to do today? It's Spirit Day on the UWS campus, so wear purple! Support your friends in the LGBTQ community. Show that you won't put up with bullying any more. Sponsored by the Gender Equity Program. Those crazy Student Health and Counseling people are giving away “beer” today in the YU Atrium, as part of their alcohol awareness program. Stop by and see what they've got to say from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Tri-State Honor Band performs tonight. Top high school musicians will be putting on a concert in Thorpe Langely Auditorium, Old Main at 7:15 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and students. And here's a chance to get involved with Student Government. SUFAC - Segregated University Fee Allocation Committee – will be holding its first meeting of the year at 8 a.m. in YU 156 – the Student Government office. It's an open meeting, and these people decide how much money YOUR student organization gets to spend. It's Thursday, and that's a good thing. Let's go make the world a better place. The Daily Buzz 10/19/2011
Lucy Roberts Editor in Chief We're halfway through the seventh week of school; in fact, we're halfway through the semester. I'm sure I'm not the only one panicking. To help keep your mind off of things, check out today's Buzz! It's Ugly Sweater Day for Homecoming! If you forgot yours, you can always run back to your dorm (if you live on campus), your grandmother's house, or Goodwill on Tower Avenue if you're really desperate to find the perfect itchy, beaded orange turtleneck. As a reminder to teachers and a warning to students, midterm grades are due by noon today. Good luck to you all! There will be an open mic reading at the Erlenbach Gathering Place in Swenson Hall today from noon to 1 p.m. The open mic event is sponsored by the Writing Across the Curriculum program as part of the National Day on Writing; everyone is invited to come and share a piece of their writing. (I don't mean to be picky, but 'Erlenbach' is misspelled 'Erlanbach' on the flier for this event. Just the editor in me, I guess.) For those of you who are more sports-oriented, there is a women's volleyball game against UW-Stout tonight at 7 p.m. in the Mortorelli Gym at the Marcovich Wellness Center. That's really all I have to say about that, so...go get 'em! I hope everybody has a swell day; keep on trucking! The Daily Buzz 10/18/2011
Kirsten Scheid Managing Editor What's happening? Tests are what's happening! But if you drag your head out of that book for just a minute... Jello shots! That's right: Student Health is handing out Jello shots. They always have something good, useful and fun to say, so take advantage of this one. Get yours from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday in the YU Atrium. And, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. there is the Superior Stew Forum in Old Main 232 (Multicultural Center) with McNair Scholars' alumni Jay Schlender. Schlender will be talking about cultural, spiritual and societal aspects of American Indians in school systems. Lunch will be provided, and everyone is welcome. I've got a Nook. Does aybody have a Kindle? I know some people are getting their textbooks on their iPad. Learn more about e-books down street at WITC from 6 to 9 p.m. Library staff will be demonstrating some of the different readers and how to get stuff from out there onto your reader. Bring your device, and they'll show you how to use it. A $5 donation is encouraged, payable to Friends of the Superior Library. The University Recital Series will showcase percussionists at 7:30 p.m in Thorpe Langley Auditorium in Old Main. It will include performances on marimbas, cymbals, drums, and...tabletops? Tickets are $12, or $10 for seniors and students. Be sure to get enough sleep and eat a good breakfast. And look at that! Right now the forecast is NOT calling for snow. It's going to be a good day. | The Daily BuzzStinger staff members blog daily about news, campus events, entertainment, sports and more. ArchivesMarch 2012 Categories |
