Lucy Roberts Editor in Chief Alright, another week down, and another weekend full of things to check out! Keep an eye on your e-mail on Friday, students. Midterm grade notices are going out that day. The second Open Mic night of the semester is on Friday night in the YU Shippar Atrium. If you've been planning on performing a song, reading some poetry, or have some stand-up to try out, now's your chance! Sign up begins at 7 p.m., with performances starting at 8. There is a futsal (soccer) tournament on Saturday starting at 3 p.m. in the Marcovich Wellness Center. Futsal is a variation of soccer that is played mainly indoors in a smaller area and with a smaller, less bouncy ball than is used in regular soccer. So if you're just sitting around in Ostrander bored out of your skull, it may be something worth checking out. If you're more into regular soccer, there is a women's game against UW-Platteville on Saturday beginning at 11:30 a.m. It's at the usual spot, down Catlin Avenue and across 28th Street behind some bushes. There is also a men's soccer game at 2 p.m. against UW-Platteville. This game is a little harder to get to, seeing as it's in Duluth at the Public Schools Stadium, so you may want to settle with watching futsal instead. Last but certainly not least is the Border Battle on Sunday from 2:30 until 6:30 p.m. Packer and Viking fans alike are invited to the YU Shippar Atrium to watch the football game and get some free food, as well as take part in some face painting and a finger football tournament. Have a great weekend! Add Comment The Daily Buzz 10/20/2011
KIrsten Scheid Managing Editor Good morning, sunshine! It's supposed to be a (not totally) sunny day! I'm going to ride my bike. A little cold for it, but there are only so many chances left for the year. Now, what else to do today? It's Spirit Day on the UWS campus, so wear purple! Support your friends in the LGBTQ community. Show that you won't put up with bullying any more. Sponsored by the Gender Equity Program. Those crazy Student Health and Counseling people are giving away “beer” today in the YU Atrium, as part of their alcohol awareness program. Stop by and see what they've got to say from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Tri-State Honor Band performs tonight. Top high school musicians will be putting on a concert in Thorpe Langely Auditorium, Old Main at 7:15 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and students. And here's a chance to get involved with Student Government. SUFAC - Segregated University Fee Allocation Committee – will be holding its first meeting of the year at 8 a.m. in YU 156 – the Student Government office. It's an open meeting, and these people decide how much money YOUR student organization gets to spend. It's Thursday, and that's a good thing. Let's go make the world a better place. Lucy Roberts Editor in Chief We're halfway through the seventh week of school; in fact, we're halfway through the semester. I'm sure I'm not the only one panicking. To help keep your mind off of things, check out today's Buzz! It's Ugly Sweater Day for Homecoming! If you forgot yours, you can always run back to your dorm (if you live on campus), your grandmother's house, or Goodwill on Tower Avenue if you're really desperate to find the perfect itchy, beaded orange turtleneck. As a reminder to teachers and a warning to students, midterm grades are due by noon today. Good luck to you all! There will be an open mic reading at the Erlenbach Gathering Place in Swenson Hall today from noon to 1 p.m. The open mic event is sponsored by the Writing Across the Curriculum program as part of the National Day on Writing; everyone is invited to come and share a piece of their writing. (I don't mean to be picky, but 'Erlenbach' is misspelled 'Erlanbach' on the flier for this event. Just the editor in me, I guess.) For those of you who are more sports-oriented, there is a women's volleyball game against UW-Stout tonight at 7 p.m. in the Mortorelli Gym at the Marcovich Wellness Center. That's really all I have to say about that, so...go get 'em! I hope everybody has a swell day; keep on trucking! The Daily Buzz 10/18/2011
Kirsten Scheid Managing Editor What's happening? Tests are what's happening! But if you drag your head out of that book for just a minute... Jello shots! That's right: Student Health is handing out Jello shots. They always have something good, useful and fun to say, so take advantage of this one. Get yours from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday in the YU Atrium. And, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. there is the Superior Stew Forum in Old Main 232 (Multicultural Center) with McNair Scholars' alumni Jay Schlender. Schlender will be talking about cultural, spiritual and societal aspects of American Indians in school systems. Lunch will be provided, and everyone is welcome. I've got a Nook. Does aybody have a Kindle? I know some people are getting their textbooks on their iPad. Learn more about e-books down street at WITC from 6 to 9 p.m. Library staff will be demonstrating some of the different readers and how to get stuff from out there onto your reader. Bring your device, and they'll show you how to use it. A $5 donation is encouraged, payable to Friends of the Superior Library. The University Recital Series will showcase percussionists at 7:30 p.m in Thorpe Langley Auditorium in Old Main. It will include performances on marimbas, cymbals, drums, and...tabletops? Tickets are $12, or $10 for seniors and students. Be sure to get enough sleep and eat a good breakfast. And look at that! Right now the forecast is NOT calling for snow. It's going to be a good day. Lucy Roberts Editor in Chief TGIF...although I must say, this week wasn't all that bad. This weekend is shaping up to be pretty good too. The All-Campus Climate Survey Results Forum will be held today in the Yellowjacket Union Great Room from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The results will provide insight into how the campus population looks at issues such as diversity, inclusion, and equity. The women's volleyball team will host Finlandia University this afternoon at 4 p.m. The game is being held at the Mortorelli Gym in the Marcovich Wellness Center. The Yellowjacket Activities Crew (YAC) is sponsoring a Halloween Photo Hunt on Saturday starting at 8 p.m. in the YU Atrium. You can dress up in a costume and take part in a scavenger hunt, but this scavenger hunt has a twist: you can only use photographs to prove you found the items on the list! The winning party gets a free pizza party. Don't forget that homecoming is coming back! You read correctly. Homecoming Week begins on Monday with Pajama and Crazy Hair Day. For a full list of the week's events, go to this link: http://www.uwsuper.edu/campuslife/news/loader.cfm?csModule=security/getfile&pageID=1359737. Have a fantastic weekend, people! Kirsten Scheid Managing Editor I'm sick. Everybody's sick. At least I'm not contagious anymore...don't look at me like that! There are some cool things to do, as long as you take your cough suppressant, and schedule your flu shot. The Tri-State Honor Jazz Festival concert is on Thursday, October 13 in Thorpe Langley Auditorium, Old Main. Tickets are $3 for students and seniors, $5 for adults. I went last year and I have to say, the high school kids are amazing, and our own Jazz Band is terrific. Well worth your time, if you like jazz. National Coming Out Week events are still going on. Jamie Nabozny will be speaking in the Yellowjacket Union Great Room on Thursday October 13 at 7 p.m. Nabozny was a target of bullying when he was in high school. It takes a lot of courage, sometimes. I think this will be a great one. The event is brought to you by the Queer and Allied Student Union (QASU) and Gender Equities program. Mock Trial is on the road! They leave Friday at noon for a match-up at University of Minnesota. This student organization is tremendously successful, so wish your favorite Mocker good fortune, or a broken gavel, or whatever one says. The Climate Survey results will be presented on Friday October 14 at 10 a.m. in the YU Great Room. This survey was part of the campus accreditation process, and it will tell us a lot about ourselves. I'll be there (with my cough drops). Kiyoto Sagawa's exhibit is still up in the Third Floor Gallery of Holden Fine Arts, and Bill Morgan's exhibit just opened in the Kruk Gallery as well. Free, and good. On Saturday October 15 the Yellowjacket Activities Crew (YAC) is going to be hosting a costume scavenger photo hunt, starting at 8 p.m. in the YU Shippar Atrium. Dress up, locate the items on the list, take a picture of them and turn them in. There will be a pizza party for the winning team! Sounds like great fun. Weather's supposed to be in the 50s and clear. Perfect for running around in a costume! The scavenger hunt is just an excuse. Have a great weekend! Another beautiful one, in this glorious season! (I love fall, can you tell?) The Daily Buzz 10/12/2011
Lucy Roberts Editor in Chief Not too much going on today, folks, but that doesn't mean it's any less important. If you're interested in studying away, stop by Yellowjacket Union Room 202 today from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and get more information about the National Student Exchange Program. The program focuses on sending students to study elsewhere in the United States as well as Canada, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. There are a couple of soccer games tonight. The women's soccer team goes up against UW-River Falls at 4 p.m. at the Superior Senior High School Soccer Field, located down Catlin Avenue across 28th Street (it's hidden behind some trees). The men's team plays the College of St. Scholastica at 8 p.m. at the Public Schools Stadium at 4405 West 4th Street in Duluth. On another note, are you curious about why the men's soccer games have been held in Duluth this semester? Keep an eye on the Stinger this week and find out! See? I told you it wasn't much. Kirsten Scheid Managing Editor Are you enjoying the leaves? I certainly am. We've got a lot of nice things going on this week. Here's a sampling. Cookies! And decorating them! The Queer and Allied Student Union (QASU) is sponsoring rainbow cookie decorating on Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. outside the Yellowjacket Union. Then in the evening there is a Coming Out Seminar at 7 p.m. in the YU Great Room. The First Nations Center will be holding a Spirit Pole Ceremony between the Yellowjacket Union and Swenson Hall on Wednesday at 2 p.m. They will also be recognizing Indigenous Day, an alternative to Columbus Day, discussing the effects of colonization on the indigenous peoples of the Americas. From 3 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday there will be a Gender Equity Open House and Coffee Talk in the Gender Equity Center in Swenson Hall, Room 1031. On Thursday, the Student Support Service Center will have an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Room 1024 of Swenson Hall. Jamie Nabozny will be in the YUn Great Room on Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. to talk about bullying and what we can do to stop it. This is sponsored by UW-Superior QASU, Gender Equity, and Women & Gender Studies, as well as University of Minnesota-Duluth QASU and Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual and Transgender Services. The Campus Climate Survey results are in, and will be presented on Friday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the YU Great Room. You can talk to Dr. Sue Rankin, who developed the survey and analyzed the returns. Get out and enjoy the outdoors before it's too cold! The Daily Buzz 10/10/2011
Lucy Roberts Editor in Chief Welcome back to Monday! I hope everyone had a good weekend; I myself was at the Apple Festival in Bayfield all weekend. The weather was perfect, but I was surprised at how few apples I actually saw. Moving on, let's see what's going on today! Queer and Allied Student Union (QASU) is sponsoring all sorts of events this week as part of National Coming Out Week. Rather than having a regular meeting tonight they invite everyone to watch "You Should Meet My Son" in the Gender Equity Resource Center in Swenson 1031. Keep an eye out for other events they've got going on! Today is the opening of the Select Works of William Morgan art exhibit in Kruk Gallery in the Holden Fine Arts Center. Morgan, a professor in the Visual Arts Department here at UWS, has had a colorful career as an educator and artist over the past 40 years. Go admire the artwork and celebrate this man's career. If you're looking for help with getting ready for advisement and finding academic services, attend the Monday Night Mingle tonight from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Yellowjacket Union fireplaces. Bring your questions and have them answered by Academic Advising and Student Support Services staff. That's all for the Buzz; have a great day! The Daily Buzz 10/07/2011
Lucy Roberts Editor in Chief TGIF! I'm sure everyone has something planned for this weekend (there's a lot happening!), but if you don't have anything planned, check out these events. Ball in the House A Cappella group is performing in the Yellowjacket Union tonight at 8 p.m. as part of Fall-A-Palooza. It sounds like something you don't want to miss. Speaking of which: Fall-A-Palooza, which is sponsored by Student Involvement, has events throughout the weekend, such as a carnival, bean bag tournament, poker walk, and tailgating party at the women's soccer game on Saturday. What better way to celebrate a (hopefully) beautiful fall day? If none of these events sound like your cup of tea, don't forget that this weekend is Bayfield's 50th Apple Festival! This small town's population swells from roughly 700 people to around 40,000 as people flock to the area to celebrate and enjoy everything apple. You need to arrange a ride over there, but it seems to be worth the trip. (This is my first year going, so I can really only speculate.) That's all for this weekend! Have a wonderful time doing whatever you're doing, and we'll see you back here bright and early on Monday! | The Daily BuzzStinger staff members blog daily about news, campus events, entertainment, sports and more.
