The Daily Buzz 09/30/2010
Nikky Farmakes Managing Editor Wow! What a spectacularly crazy week. If you’ve been buried under readings, papers, and projects, trust me. I feel your pain. Hopefully this Daily Buzz will help you find some time to enjoy the good things in life. However, I warn you this isn’t exactly on-campus, but it is Superior related. This Friday is Superior High School’s Homecoming for Football. Since UWS doesn’t have a football team, it is nice that the High school still plays. It shows a nice bit of Superior Pride to go out and support the team. The Spartans will take on D.C. Everest. The football game is held at Ole Haugsrud field on campus and starts at 7:00pm. Also, this Saturday, October 2, the First nations Center is holding its annual “Fall Walk Around.” The “walk around” happens at Pattison State Park, just outside of Superior. It’s a great chance to take in the fall colors and meet people from diverse backgrounds, not to mention get to eat some good chili and cornbread. The event is free to those going to the walk-around and the event will begin at 11am. Thanks for checking today’s Buzz and don’t forget to keep checking back! Add Comment The Daily Buzz 09/28/2010
Nikky Farmakes Managing Editor Hello Yellowjackets! I hope your weekend was as fantastic as mine was! It may be sad that today is all gloomy, but never fear, the campus has events to help keep your spirits up. Here is your Daily Buzz. Tonight, Tuesday September 28, there will be “An Evening of Chamber Music,” in Thorpe Langley auditorium at 7:30pm. Thorpe Langley is located in Old Main on the second floor. Students in the UW-Superior Music program are putting this on, and it is a great opportunity to see exactly what students on campus are learning. Tomorrow, Wednesday September 29, there will be National Women’s Health and Fitness day. It is an opportunity for women to get information on many issues that affect their health. There will be a booth set up in the Yellowjacket Union Shippar Atrium from 11am-1pm. Don’t forget to check back and see what the next buzz is! The Daily Buzz 09/23/2010
Nikky Farmakes Managing Editor The only thing I dislike about it being rainy is that it makes appreciating the fall leaves impossible. All the rain bogs down the leaves and forces them to make an early departure from the trees. Today is unfortunately one of those days. However, this weekend is chalked full of activities to talk about in today’s Daily Buzz! Many of you have seen the fliers, or have gotten the post cards, informing all of the Fall for UW-Superior Family Weekend. The weekend starts this Friday, September 24 and ends on Sunday September 26. Activities include, a screening of the movie Prince of Persia Friday at 10pm in the Yellowjacket Union Great Room, a Tailgate Party for UWS Soccer at 11am on Saturday at the UWS Soccer fields, and a explore the Twin Ports day on Sunday. For a full schedule check out this link: http://www.uwsuper.edu/involvement/familyweekend/family-weekend-schedule.cfm. Family Weekend is a chance for students and their families to get to know and enjoy the campus together. The weekend is sponsored by, First Year Experience, Department of Student Involvement, Athletics, Campus Recreation, Residence Hall Association, and the Yellowjacket Union. So don’t let the weather get you down this weekend! And don’t forget to check back for the next Buzz! The Daily Buzz 09/22/2010
Nikky Farmakes Managing Editor Wednesday is definitely a day that most of us need to take a moment and relax. Nikky Farmakes Managing Editor We had two beautiful days in a row? Man, we really must have been nice to Mother Nature lately! I stand by the statements made yesterday: enjoy it while you can! So, while you are out yet again enjoying the beautiful weather, here is your Daily Buzz. This week, the Multicultural Center in Old Main room 232 will be hosting “Remember Me: Voices of the Silenced” from September 13 to September 24. This exhibit has artifacts and other pieces that focus in on Columbia, a South American country torn apart by violence, missing persons, and conflict. One such artifact is a quilt, put together by a mother with clothing of her four missing daughters. This exhibit is a must see for anyone. The Multicultural Center is open from 8am-4:30pm Monday through Friday. Also, Men’s Soccer will be playing the University of St. Thomas this Wednesday, September 15 at 4pm at the UW-Superior Soccer Field. The field is located behind Ross Hall. Nikky Farmakes Managing Editor Such a beautiful day today! If you don’t get a chance to get out and enjoy it, I apologize. If you are able to get out and enjoy, make sure you take a moment and soak in the sun, trust me. It might be weeks, or maybe months before we get another day like this. Enjoy it while you can! While you are enjoying it, here is your Daily Buzz. Jacket Fest! Jacket Fest! Jacket Fest! If there was one time of the semester that you get out and see what clubs/organizations are available to students, this would be it. Jacket Fest is a student organization, on-campus jobs and department, volunteer, off-campus job, and community merchant fair. The fair will be held Tuesday September 14, from 11am-1pm in the Yellowjacket Union Plaza. If you don’t go for anything else, come see yours truly at the Stinger Media booth! Now that you’ve got the Buzz, go outside! Enjoy the day! I will see you tomorrow! The Daily Buzz 09/09/2010
Nikky Farmakes Managing Editor Thursday is one of the best days of the week. Albeit classes are about twenty minutes longer on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but the prospect of the weekend being a mere day away is intoxicating. With the allure of the second weekend of the semester being at our finger tips, I leave you with today’s Daily Buzz. This Friday September 10, at 8pm in the Yellowjacket Union Atrium, the Yellowjacket Activities Crew (YAC) will be presenting Amanda Duncan. Amanda Duncan is a musician that focuses on a more acoustic sound. Getting to see music, for free, on a Friday isn’t a deal you get to utilize very often, so why not? Also, Friday September 10 through Thursday September 16 is the week where courses can be added without having to meet with the Credits Committee. You first must obtain an add/drop slip from your professor, and have it signed by both your professor and your advisor. Then, you must receive an OK from the Cashier’s office, before bringing the slip to the Registrars. And finally, Friday September 10 is the last day for students with a meal plan to change their meal plans. So if you are on the Black and Gold plan and wish to change to Unlimited, your time, unfortunately, is limited. Meal plans can be changed at the Yellowjacket Union Information and Services Desk. Don't forget to check back tomorrow to catch the Buzz! The Daily Buzz 09/08/2010
Nikky Farmakes Managing Editor I got to witness today, a student be extremely excited that she got her 150$ Business book for $135 off Amazon. I’m sure stories like this reverberate across the student spectrum. I commend this student for trying to find the best available price for her book! You go girl! I would like to remind all my readers that books are only as expensive as you make them, and there are available outlets, like half.com and chegg.com. Happy hunting! But, while you are hunting here is The Daily Buzz. From September 9through September 11, the Jim Dan Hill Library and the Lake Superior Maritime Collection will be hosting the Association for Great Lakes Maritime History conference. There will be multiple presentations on a broad spectrum of Great Lake Maritime topics. For non-association members, the cost is $20 to attend a presentation. Also, Thursday September 9th is the final day to register for the first block of Intramural sports. The registration is due by 10pm at the Marcovich Wellness Center Welcome Desk.
