It’s been another hectic week on campus, with sporting events, club meetings, and campus sponsored activities.  But, sadly, there are still students out there missing out on all the fun even after explaining last week about the wonders of the Student Digest. Here is what you missed when you decided that easily clickable e-mail wasn’t worth your time.

Stir Fry Cooking Class
Let’s face it – for most of us, our cooking experience is limited to: microwaving and Ramen.   Thankfully, the amazing Executive Chef for A‘viands, Patrick Moore, is offering a free stir-fry class next Wednesday, September 30 at noon in the cafeteria. Sherie Nelson, the Registered Dietitian, will also be on hand giving out nutrition advice. Not only do you get to learn how to make a healthy meal, but you get to taste-test and get valuable nutrition advice as well.

Open Mic Night
This Friday at 8 pm the Concourse will become a Mecca for poets, musicians, and anyone else with the guts to get up in front of the microphone. The event, which is sponsored by YAC, is slated to be a once-a-month carousel on campus. You don’t have to be a performer to enjoy the show, and who knows, maybe the audience will get to witness the next-big-thing.  Think you want to perform? Registration starts an hour before the show in the Concourse.

Health Care is a Human Right
Though this event happened last Tuesday, it still was a major thing missed. Amnesty International hosted a banner signing, where the banner read “Health Care is a Human Right.”  The signed banner was then sent to the local offices of congress representatives for the Duluth-Superior area, Jim Oberstar and Dave Obey respectively. This is a hot issue for many students, especially those without insurance.  If you need help or want to make your voice heard on the issue, contact Amnesty International or Professor Khalil Dokhanchi (Who nearly everyone, including himself, refers to as Haji.)

Classes are well underway as we enter our third week of classes here on the campus of UW-Superior. The initial awkwardness and pre-first-day of class jitters should be gone as the anxiety of a first test or assignment creeps in to take its place. Oh joy. Despite some moaning and groaning, being back in the routine of class, work, practices, meetings, and what-have-you is a comfort for many of us. Comfort in routine and the busy-ness of the school year.

As for our student organization, Stinger Media, this year is one of transition. As you’ve noticed, we now have a website. Instead of printing a paper every two weeks, this site will serve as our main publication. Being online provides us with the opportunity to save money on printing costs, produce fresh news, and use multiple media. You can expect to encounter daily updates and coverage of campus events on here. It is our hope that you will make regular stops at our site; check it as you check your Facebook account.

We will have one tangible publication this semester. In November we will be publishing a magazine. Within the 24+ pages there will be feature stories, investigative reporting, many photographs, hopefully some creative essays and poems, and maybe even some recipes.

Thank you for stopping and don’t hesitate to submit a letter to the editor or leave a comment.

Enjoy!
